The Most Effective Form of Self-Defence

Throughout history, people of all different civilisations and cultures developed different ways in which to defend themselves from dangerous and unfriendly beings. Practically every culture in the world has some history of martial arts; these are unarmed and armed combat techniques. The most famous are those of East Asia, particularly Japan and China. However, there are also Thai forms of martial arts that are very effective. In the common parlance of martial artists, the difference comes down to the “points of contact.” The points of contact argument is a philosophy which supports the claim that Muay Thai is one of the most effective forms of self-defence.

Points of Contact

In martial arts, the points of contact, or the striking points, are places on your own body that you use to hit someone. In boxing, there are two points of contact: only your fists will connect with the body of your opponent. In kickboxing, tae kwon do, and some other martial arts, there are four points of contact: your two feet and your two hands strike your opponent. These are great as exercise or as competition, but, in actuality, you have far more strike points than that. If you are looking for a fighting style to aid you in self-defence, you should not limit yourself to just two or four points of contact. Your elbows and your knees are actually incredible damaging parts of your body: they are very hard, and you can deliver a great amount of force with them. That’s why Muay Thai utilises eight points of contact; the striking points include your hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Incorporating the elbows and knees gives you far more options for striking your opponent; in a self-defence situation, having options for attacking your opponent is essential. You can learn Muay Thai Indonesia for self-defence, but don’t forget about fitness.

Fitness Considerations

Muay Thai represents one of the most effective forms of self-defence; however, it also represents one of the most effective forms of exercise. Interestingly, it is great for both purposes for the same reason; the eight points of contact make it great exercise. Since you will be striking out with your elbows and knees, you will be creating new angles of attack. The new angles of attack and defence mean that you will have to engage a larger variety of muscles to go through the Muay Thai manoeuvres. The added muscular engagement means that it is a more effective form of exercise than a martial art that only has two or four points of contact.

Muay Thai has been around for hundreds of years; it was developed from the earlier fighting styles and turned into a sport. Though it is designed as a sport, it is incredibly effective as a form of self-defence. However, it has never lost its usefulness as a competition. Whether you intend to work your way up the ranks of Muay Thai fighters, or you just want to get a good workout, Muay Thai is a great option. Engaging the elbows and knees diversifies the stress and increases the efficacy of the workout. Furthermore, you will be having fun and getting in shape while learning how to defend yourself.
