Foot pain is a common pain that many people will suffer from over the course of their lifetime. Though it is often encouraged by others to “walk it off” immediately following an injury, it is important to resist the urge. Pain is a necessary signal to the body that something is wrong and should never be ignored. Not resting an injured foot may end up worsening the condition and prolonging the time it takes to get back to engaging in regular everyday activities. Additionally, it can help to elevate the injured foot during the resting period. This will work to reduce any swelling along with any accompanying pain.
The second way to reduce foot pain is to apply ice. Applying ice may provide ample relief in a short amount of time. Not only does icing the injury allow swelling to decrease, but numbs the area for immediate comfort. This process can be and should be continually repeated, but always being sure to never keep ice on the foot for longer than twenty minutes at a time to avoid getting frostbite.
The third way to decrease pain due to a foot injury is to use a compression wrap. Wrapping the foot can help keep it immobile while providing additional support. Just as it is important not to ice the injury for too long, it is equally important that the compression wrap is never too tight to avoid cold, blue toes! As always, it is always important to consult a physician following a foot injury. A physician may not only be able to assess if more serious action is needed by foot surgeons, but they may also be able to recommend over the counter medicines, prescription pain relief, or a pain management program.
